TU PASADO
ES MI
PRESENTE

BY CAROLINA ISABEL SALAZAR

When I ponder identity, I imagine two different realities that co-exist in tension within my soul: the experience of my immigrant parents, who fought for a better life for their children, and my experience as a first generation Latina raised in Los Angeles. My parent’s sacrifice gave me a foundation of security, enabling me to evolve and expand my way of living, working and creating. This is an experience -- and at times a burden -- that many immigrants face. The archetypes of the immigrant experience serve as a palette for future generations to transform. Our privilege to express ourselves is made possible by the humble and hard work of our living ancestors.

The intention of “Tu Pasado Eso Mi Presente” is to blend those personal microcosms and change the narrative of how we identify and perceive these larger archetypes. This project is an ode to our living ancestors, presented through the embrace of our American generation.
