WAVELENGTHS

BY ZACH SORENSEN

Growing up near the coast, I have always been fascinated by the allure of surfing, but the sport seemed intimidating for its lack of diversity. It took me until my twenties to take the plunge. Since then, I’ve found an immense sense of belonging amongst the vibrant Black surf community in Southern California, a welcome reminder that I’m not alone in my passion.

"Wavelengths" is an ongoing project dedicated to documenting and celebrating the strength, creativity, and unity that thrives within the Black surf community. Ultimately, I hope that these images and stories serve as inspiration, reassuring diverse audiences that there are people who look like them, finding peace and purpose in surfing, and that they too are welcome in the ocean.
