WEWere GODS

BY KANDICE CHAVOUS

We Were Gods is a visual poem where mythology, history, and theology converge into a meditation on exile and glory lost. Seleno and Helias, celestial siblings punished for their destructive rivalry, are destined to orbit in eternal separation, granted only one fleeting moment each day to share the sky. Their story echoes Cleopatra’s children — heirs stripped of their royal destiny — and the African-American experience, where brilliance is often eclipsed by societal confines. Narrated by a durag-clad street griot in Shakespearean sonnet, the film unfolds as a lyrical allegory for longing, resilience, and the pursuit of divine restoration.
