For years my parents taught me a three-word phrase. I’d hear it after school when I arrived at their restaurant, crayons and toys in hand. When at home it echoed inside the pantry when they caught me searching for gold-wrapped chocolates. Whether it was bowls of porridge in winter, carefully arranged fruit platters in summer, or handmade egg rolls each birthday, food was our way of talking to one another. This project pays tribute to all those cherished memories—ones that were bookended not by “I love you,” but the words, “have you eaten?”
